HELENA KORPELA

In this exhibition, Helena’s work encompasses three themes that have been ongoing in her oeuvre since she moved to Ireland in 1996: Legacy landscape, rural planning/development, and colour abstraction.
Nostalgia of legacy is evoked in The Local (2025). An earlier painting in this vein that depicts a petrol station near Cahirciveen, Closed on Sunday (2004) was acquired by the Office of Public Works.
In Georgian Dublin (2023) and Ministry of Construction (2025) there are subtle criticisms of the government’s lax housing plans. The Bungalows Are Coming, an earlier painting on a similar theme, was awarded the DeVeres Prize at the 2002 RHA Annual.
The third of these themes, colour abstraction and emotional complexity are evident in After Rain (2024), West (2025) and Cultivation Traces (2023). The mixed media work in Wind (2023) is evocative of life ”Under Irish Skies”.
Helena’s inspiration for the built environment and colour is drawn from her previous career as principal interior designer with Benjamin Thompson Associates (BTA). Major projects include the renovation of Union Station in Washington, DC and NYU School of Law.
The artist draws inspiration from the Bauhaus movement, and the art of Paul Klee. Helena is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, and a member of the Artist’s Association of Finland. Helena Korpela’s works are in public and private collections in USA, UK, Ireland and Finland.
